Another Month On…

Non-Hodgkin's Follicular Lymphoma:

I saw the specialist hematologist registrar again. He wasn’t too worried about starting treatment since my bloodwork (yes, fresh samples this time—I'm not letting them use old ones again) didn’t show any lymphoma red flags. But I do have several B symptoms:

- Night sweats: Drenching and delightful, and possibly menopause-related. So, I’m either burning up from within or just really, really sweaty. Fun times!

- Weight loss: Yes, you read that right! I've actually lost 7kg since the end of February. Is it cancer, or my new swimming routine? Who knows! Maybe I'll start a fitness blog: "Lose Weight with Lymphoma!" I have been referred to the dietitian but I am pretty sure my diet is all around healthy!

- Fevers: I’ve been unwell with breathing issues for months—my last x-ray showed fluid in my lungs. So that explains why I felt like I was drowning. Spoiler: I was. What is causing the constant fevers?

Today, I went for another CT scan with fluoroscopy. I braced myself for that disgusting drink again, but thank you, Furness General Hospital—they’ve upgraded to a less gloopy version with some orange cordial to disguise the taste. Definitely not as awful now! Still had to get a cannula and still experienced the sensation of wetting myself, but I'm well used to that by now. Just have to wait another two weeks for results!

Breathing:

After more antibiotics and steroids, I can finally breathe again, my cough has subsided, and I no longer have to constantly worry about peeing myself. Thank goodness! I feel better than I have in months, but I'm still more poorly than your average Joe. No follow-up chest x-ray this week since they can just use the CT scan results. Win-win!

Walking:

My arthritic knees are still a nightmare. Walking far or doing too much is a no-go. On good days, when I push myself a bit, I regret it the next day. It’s like my knees have a very short memory for pain but a long memory for revenge. The sauna, jacuzzi, and swimming really help build strength. And those lovely massages from cancer care? Amazing, but sadly, they’re ending soon. On the bright side, my legs have improved—no more water retention, and I finally have proper ankles and visible muscles! Who knew ankles could bring so much joy?

Mental Health:

Anxiety, anxiety, and more anxiety—about my health, my body, and catching bugs in social situations. But my friend Julie practically dragged me out for a much-needed night to see Boyzlife. And guess what? It was fantastic! Keith Duffy from Boyzone and Brian McFadden from Westlife put on a great show. Even if they’re not your usual taste, go see them!

I’m continuing with talking therapy and hope to feel more like my old self—or maybe even a better version—soon.
